Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)
Overview
The skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189) is a permanent residence program for skilled workers, NZ citizens and eligible Hong Kong citizens to live/work indefinitely in Australia.

Eligibility Criteria
Points Tested Stream
- Age under 45 years, unless exemptions apply
- Occupation listed on skilled occupation list
- Positive skills assessment for nominated occupation
- Competent English language proficiency
- 65+ points score on skilled migration points test
- Invited to apply based on EOI submitted in SkillSelect
New Zealand Stream
- Hold a Special Category Visa Subclass 444
- At least 5 years or usual residence in Australia before Feb 2016
- At least 3 taxable income years out of last 5 above threshold
Hong Kong Stream
- Hold a valid HK or BNO passport
- Held eligible temp work/grad visa for at least 4 out of last 5 years
- Must have lived in Australia for 4 years immediately before applying
