New Core Skills Occupation List & Key Changes to the Skills in Demand Visa Program

The Australian Government has officially announced the release of the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), a significant reform in the temporary skilled migration program. This update introduces a streamlined list of 456 occupations, simplifying the migration process for employers and skilled workers. The CSOL will take effect on 7 December 2024, coinciding with the launch of the Skills in Demand visa, which replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa.

Key Features of the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

The CSOL was developed through Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) in consultation with industry stakeholders and labour market analysis. It aims to replace outdated and rigid occupation lists with a unified approach that reflects Australia’s current workforce needs.

Applications of the CSOL

  1. Skills in Demand Visa: Applies to the Core Skills stream, replacing the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa.
  2. Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) – Subclass 186: Forms the basis of the Direct Entry stream, offering pathways to permanent residency.

Occupations Removed from the CSOL

Certain roles from the existing Medium & Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), and Regional Occupation List (ROL) have been excluded from the new CSOL. These occupations will no longer qualify for the Tier 2 (Core Skills Pathway) of the Skills in Demand visa.
