Contributory Parent Temporary (Subclass 173)

Overview

The Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (Subclass 173) allows parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens to stay in Australia temporarily for up to 2 years. It serves as a pathway to applying for permanent residency through the Contributory Parent category.

Eligibility Factors  

To qualify, applicants must:

– Have a child settled in Australia who can sponsor them

– Meet balance of family test for siblings in/outside Australia   

– Be in good health and of good character

– Have no outstanding debts to the government 

– Not have any prior visa cancellations

Subclass 173 Process

1. Apply outside or inside Australia with $2,850 fee per person

2. Get granted 2 year temporary entry if eligible 

3. Then must apply for permanent Subclass 143 visa before expiry 

The Subclass 173 visa allows parents to split migration costs over time while reuniting with family in Australia temporarily. If found eligible, permanent residence can then be sought through the Contributory Parent category.
