Qualifications
Applicants must complete a minimum of four years of higher education (or part-time equivalent) at the university level, resulting in recognized qualifications, including an initial teacher education qualification.
Requirements for Initial Teacher Education Qualification:
- Must be equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) or higher.
- Includes at least one year of full-time study in early childhood teacher education.
- Involves at least 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students aged birth to 8 years in pre-primary and early years settings.
- Other qualifications contributing to the four years must be comparable to an Advanced Diploma/Associate Degree (AQF Level 6) or higher.
Note: Short courses, professional development programs, or incomplete qualifications are not considered.
English Language Proficiency
Applicants must meet one of the following two options to demonstrate English proficiency:
Completion of at least four full years of higher education (or part-time equivalent) in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the UK, or the USA, leading to qualifications comparable to an Australian Bachelor degree or higher. The study must include an initial teacher education qualification.
OR
An IELTS Academic Test Report Form (TRF) showing:
- Reading and Writing: Minimum score of 7.0
- Speaking and Listening: Minimum score of 8.0
All scores must appear on a single IELTS TRF and be obtained within 24 months before submission.
Note: AITSL may require the IELTS test if there is any uncertainty about the applicant’s English proficiency.

1. 189 Visa – Skilled Independent Visa
- Age: Under 45 years
- English: IELTS 6.0 or equivalent
- Points: Minimum 65 points
- Summary: Permanent visa with no regional work requirement.
2. 190 Visa – Skilled Nominated Visa
- Age: Under 45 years
- English: IELTS 6.0 or higher (as per state requirements)
- Points: Minimum 65 points or more
- Summary: Permanent visa requiring state nomination.
3. 491 Visa – Skilled Work Regional Visa
- Age: Under 45 years
- English: IELTS 6.0 or equivalent
- Points: Minimum 65 points
- Summary: 5-year visa with a pathway to the 191 visa for permanent residency.
4. 485 Visa – Post-Study Work Stream
- Age: Under 50 years
- English: IELTS 6.0 or equivalent (no band below 5)
- Summary: 2-year visa for recent graduates.
5. 407 Training Visa
- Age: Over 18 years
- English: IELTS 4.5 or equivalent
- Summary: Up to 2 years for professional development through sponsorship.
6. 186 Visa – Employer Nomination Scheme
- Age: Under 45 years (unless exempt)
- English: IELTS 6.0 or equivalent
- Experience: 3 years full-time work in the nominated occupation
- Summary: Permanent visa through employer sponsorship.
7. 494 Visa – Skilled Sponsored Regional Visa
- Age: Under 45 years (unless exempt)
- English: IELTS 6.0 or equivalent
- Experience: 3 years of relevant work experience
- Summary: 5-year visa with a pathway to permanent residency.
8. 482 Visa – Temporary Skill Shortage (Medium Term) Visa
- Age: No specific limit
- English: IELTS 5.0 or higher (no band below 5)
- Summary: Up to 4 years through employer sponsorship.
